It’s gonna drop soon…within a week or two….don’t know what it’s going to be…the eruption of Mount Katla? Another huge crash in the markets? California hit by a 10.5? All of the above?
This is just a gut feeling… I mean there is so much going haywire these days that I’m hardly the next coming of Nostradamus if I prove to be correct on such a vague timeline (as oppsed to predicting next Tuesday at 3:44 GMT) but I’ve had these feelings before….the last one was before the Flash Crash and the one before that was a week before the Tsunami in 2004….
I did not have any premonitions about the Lehman collapse, but then again people who were very well placed to see it didn’t either….
Guess I’ll just mix myself another Mohito and sit back and wait for the show….
Geez, a vague premonition of doom. *rolls eyes* 😉
Actually, I share this feeling. Even though I pride myself on being a rationalist, science based skeptic, I can’t help but feel the universe has it “in for us” lately. My human tendency to see patterns where there are none is clouding my vision. Of course, you’re paranoid if nothing happens, a visionary if something does.
First the financial crises, then Europe’s airspace being shut down, the Gulf crises, major earthquakes in Chile and Haiti, etc.
What next and how soon?
Most likely disease..plague…that sort of thing.. I figure we might just be able to cling to the current system for dear life… I mean incredible as it seems markets still functioned during World War 2… I just wonder how robust the Internet will be if power outages on the level common in Iraq during the height of Gulf War 2 were common place in the West.
It would take a MONSTER catastrophe to stop trading and hence the operation. Even 9/11 didn’t stop things for very long. I’m curious to see how much further things have to decline for the average unemployed American before they start showing up in large threatening numbers wherever people in suits have to pass through a door on the way to work.
Could the U.S. surive another Kent State? What if rioting and looting became a daily occurence in a number of large American cities. What will happen when the next Cat 5 hits the Gulf, most likely this summer? Here are some hypotheses
So basically we can look forward to a progression of natural disasters caused by pollution, resource depletion and climate change in combination with the ongoing stresses being applied to our political and economic systems. As people become more and more stressed on a deeply pschylogical level and medicine becomes less and less available following deep cuts to government services and/or shortages of supplies and drugs to to market failures, the stage will be set for the return of population culling diseases. The treatment of H1N1 seems to have been somewhat successful but that virus was a wimp.
In the end I think one could argue that the financial/political crisis is more a result of our biosphere turning against humans than a cause… We’ve pushed the envelope too far. There is plenty of blame to go around. And while are all complicit the Republican adminsitration under Dubbya was most likely the last chance the world had to get somewhat ahead of the problem.
While I am not optimistic in the short term I am actually fairly optimistic on humanity surviving and flourishing…but there will be massive disruptive change on a global scale before the dust settles…

Agreed. (I agree with the rest too, but that’s a nice synopsis.)
The curious part of me is interested in seeing how flexible our society is, where are the actual envelopes (financial, energy, biosphere) and how will we deal with the ruptures? It’s a massive, global, social experiment.
What scares me is that I’m part of the experiment and not just an observer!
Let’s just say that walking around in large, crowded, public spaces has that eery feeling of being in those slow motion scenes in disaster flicks moments before the disaster strikes…
I am also paying particular attention to everyday trivial scenes (driving past farmer’s fields yesterday, the sun was shinin’, the sprinklers were sprinklin’ and the farmers farmin’) in an attempt to etch into my mind “the way it was before…”
I also made a mental note of the location of a local sheep farmer..you know..in case I had to go out and poach dinner.
Think your quite right on two of the three possibilities you see. The first will be Katla, (based on its history) which will ravage Europe’s financial markets and bring about a Crash of epic proportions.
I’m beginning to believe it is why they are all running scared already. They know whats coming long before we do. We are so busy we tend to wake up just seconds before the train hits us, and of course, they are the ones behind the controls.
Just my two cents, dosen’t mean much I know, but I guess we will see soon enough.
Enjoyed running across your site.
Thanks!
